| Antivirus software |
A virus is a software program designed by man to reproduce itself. Usually the virus is hidden into a file (a game or an image) that once it's on your computer, will reproduce itself by infecting other files. Next to a virus there are also worms, infecting networks of computers by finding security holes in a piece of software. Usually the virus and the worm are hidden in what is called a Trojan. This is a non harmful program that hides a harmful virus or worm.
Similar to a biological virus that needs a cell to reproduce itself, a computer virus needs a piece of software, a program to work. Once the virus is on your computer it will start to infect other software, without you knowing it. After the infection phase, viruses usually start their attack phase, most of the time this attack is malicious. During this phase, the virus will then do something, anything from printing a message on the screen to erasing all of your data or software configurations. This means that in most cases you will need to reinstall your computer's operating software and all other software you installed and used before. Most of the time people don't think to take back-up of all their installed software and their valuable data…
Today, with a widespread use of internet and e-mail, viruses and worms spread like plagues. This means that more and more people install specific software onto their computer, called anti virus software, to scan every new incoming email and every application that is started on the computer.
